What is additive manufacturing?

Additive manufacturing, also known as additive manufacturing or 3D printing, is an innovative generative manufacturing process in which components are built up layer by layer from a material. This additive process has established itself as a key technology, particularly in metal processing, as it enables the production of complex structures. A key aspect of this technology is laser melting, in which metal powder is selectively melted and solidified by a laser.

Laser melting in the additive manufacturing of metal components

Melting using a laser is a key process in the additive manufacturing of parts. Here, metal powder is melted layer by layer using a high-performance laser to create complex geometries and fine structures. Its precision and efficiency make it a favoured method for the production of high-quality metal components. We offer innovative solutions that support the laser melting process by optimising inert gas circulation and efficient gas cooling.

Becker: Your partner for additive manufacturing

Our gas-tight blowers and heat exchangers are essential for a high-quality additive 3D printing process. They enable efficient circulation and cooling of the shielding gas. This ensures that no oxygen enters the process and your components are protected from oxidation. This is essential in order to utilise the full potential of additive manufacturing and ensure consistently high component quality.

Why Becker?

Benefit from our decades of experience in manufacturing technology. Our gas-tight blowers and components are specially designed to meet the challenges of additive manufacturing in the metal sector. We know how important a stable and controlled gas flow is for the melting process. Our products not only improve the process conditions, but also optimise the layer-by-layer process for uniform material properties of the printed parts.

FAQ

In additive manufacturing, also known as 3D printing, parts are produced by adding material layer by layer. It is a generative process. With additive manufacturing, as far as possible only the material for the production of the part itself is required.

Because of the considerable added value of AM:

  • Unlimited design possibilities

  • Parts with high complexity / finest structures

  • Integration of numerous parts (instead of conventionally welded or bolted together)

  • Integrated function

  • Individual / personalised form or shape

  • Lower weight

  • Greater strength and durability

  • More sustainable

  • Better material utilisation, less waste material

  • Lower energy consumption for the production of the 3D part

  • Lower energy consumption when using the 3D part

The two main segments are

  • Polymer AM, which generally requires no shielding gas for the printing process
  • Metal AM, which often requires inert gas

Within these market segments, there are various processes for manufacturing parts in 3D printers.

One of the most widely used processes is laser beam powder bed fusion (PBF-LB laser beam powder bed fusion). Other designations are SLM, LMF or DMLM. These are used exclusively by the respective AM machine manufacturer.

In order to build complex three-dimensional parts from a digital model layer by layer, the PBF-LB selectively fuses the powder within the 3D printer.

3D printing takes place in an inert atmosphere with the exclusion of oxygen to prevent oxidation of the powder during the melting process. In addition, by-products of laser melting, such as condensate (ultra-fine welding fumes), must be removed from the chamber to prevent any impairment of the process.

The contaminated gas is therefore extracted from the chamber, passed through a filter and the filtered clean gas is then recirculated. This is done by a gas circulation blower, which is installed in the gas circuit.

If necessary, e.g. if there is a high heat input into the process, a gas heat exchanger is also integrated into the gas circuit in order to contribute to constant process conditions.

We are one of the pioneers in additive manufacturing and offer state-of-the-art compressor and heat exchanger technologies for gas circulation in laser powder bed machines. The unique products ensure a consistently high quality of the atmosphere in the metal AM machines and thus make a significant contribution to the production of high-quality 3D parts.
