As an industrial manufacturer, we are passionate about inspiring the next generation of innovators and problem solvers.
Recently, our Managing Director, Richard Oxley, and Marketing Manager, Ella Stubbs, had the privilege of representing Becker at Hull & East Yorkshire Children's University's first-ever careers fair.
Alongside a handful of fantastic local businesses from all sectors, this event provided a valuable opportunity to engage with young individuals, demonstrating the real-world impact of vacuum pump technology and mechanical engineering - all while planting a seed to inspire future career aspirations.
Making science fun and accessible:
With a goal to spark curiosity and uplift the children attending the fair, we used hands-on activities to illustrate how vacuum pumps and compressors are involved in many hidden everyday processes. One of the key takeaways was demonstrating how vacuum-powered machines are used to package their favourite foods and snacks such as meats, crisps and sweets.
We hope this captured their interest in engineering careers and highlighted the essential role engineering plays in everyday life.
Exploring the power of physics:
Another exciting part of the day was when the children had the chance to participate in experiments in our vacuum chamber. With the help of Richard, they discovered firsthand the power of physics, observing how vacuum pressure affects objects and materials such as water, marshmallows and balloons!
These fun experiments offered a truly unique and engaging way to demonstrate scientific principles in action, making physics both fun and memorable.
Discovering career paths in engineering:
Of course, the main focus of the event was to expose the children to potential career paths in mechanical engineering.
During the morning, we discussed the various career opportunities available at Becker and how individuals can pursue paths in fields such as mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, marketing, finance, sales, and operations, among many others.
Rose and Sarah from our charity partner, also hosted a panel discussion featuring inspiring local professionals (including our Managing Director, Richard) who shared their career journeys and warming, valuable advice for young minds.
Hull and East Yorkshire Children’s University is a charity dedicated to providing every child with the opportunities they deserve, regardless of the circumstances they were born into.
In Hull, many children face significant challenges, with one in three growing up in poverty. For some, the world extends no further than their local street, and many will never travel to another city until adulthood. As a result, some children struggle to envision a future beyond their immediate surroundings.
At HEY Children’s University, they believe every child has unique talents, but how can they discover them if they don’t have the opportunity to explore new experiences? This is where the charity steps in.
Through our partnership, Becker UK aims to enrich the lives of young individuals across the region, ensuring they have access to opportunities that might otherwise be out of reach.
We are committed to helping all children find inspiration and joy in their daily lives, empowering them to discover their potential and dream big for the future.
A special thank you to the team at Hull and East Yorkshire Children's University for inviting us to be a part of such an important event in the local region. We’re proud to have played a small part in inspiring the next generation of innovators. Events like these help ignite curiosity, encourage learning, and open doors to exciting future careers, no matter the industry.
